    The Predator Triton 700 sports an aluminum chassis and checks in at 2.6kg (5.7 pounds)—a far cry from ultrabook territory, but certainly manageable for a gaming laptop. Its waistline measures just 18.9mm (0.74 inches). That is considerably thinner and lighter than not just the Predator 21 X but most modern laptops.

    Acer says these laptops are powered by Core processors based on Intel's latest Kaby Lake architecture. They also feature Nvidia GeForce 10-series graphics, two NVMe PCIe SSDs in RAID 0, and up to 32GB of DDR4-2400MHz.

    All of this combines to drive a 15.6-inch 1080p IPS display with G-Sync support. Acer is also pushing the VR angle in collaboration with Intel.



    "Acer is driving some incredible new products for the gaming and VR-ready category and Intel is excited to work together to push what’s possible on the PC platform,” said Frank Soqui, General Manager of the Virtual Reality and Gaming Group at Intel Corporation.     Other notables includes Killer DoubleShot Pro networking with Thunderbolt 3 connectivity, two USB 3.0 ports, a single USB 2.0 port, GbE LAN, HDMI and DisplayPort outputs, and an RGB backlit keyboard.

    It also features a cool glass panel above the keyboard that functions as the laptop's trackpad while letting you peer in on the cooling solution inside.

    The Predator Triton 700 will be available in August.

    Those benefits come by way of a dual-sided pad that you can flip within its RGB frame. On one side is a micro-textured cloth that adds friction for more deliberate movements, while the other side consists of a hard polymer surface for fast and smooth gliding.

    "Every aspect of this peripheral was built with purpose. It delivers premium surface performance with brilliant lighting and zero mouse cable interference," says Jason Christian, category manager for gaming surfaces, mice and keyboards at SteelSeries.

    The mouse pad measures 292.4 x 8.68 x 356.72mm (WxHxD) and weighs a hefty two pounds. It has a cable length of 1.8m.


    Getting back to the RGB illumination, there are a dozen zones you can customize with various effects. These can be tied to in-game events, such as low ammo, health, kills, and so forth.     [Update] Mobile Ubuntu Gamble to Fizzle Out in June

    Canonical this week said that it will end its support for Ubuntu Touch phones and Ubuntu-powered tablets in June, and that it will shut down its app store at the end of this year. The company previously had signaled the system's demise, but it had not fixed a date.

    With Ubuntu Touch, a unified mobile OS based on Ubuntu Linux, Canonical hoped to establish a marketable alternative to the Android and iOS platforms.

    Unity Out

    The news came on the heels of Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth's recent disclosure that the company had decided to drop Ubuntu's Unity desktop environment as of the next major distro release. That revelation hinted that more shedding of unsuccessful technologies would follow.

    Canonical will replace its shelved flagship desktop environment with GNOME 3. The Unity decision was based, at least in part, on continuing difficulties in moving it to the Mir X-window server system. That combination was integral to the Ubuntu phone and tablet development.

    "Ubuntu phones and tablets will continue to operate. OTA (over-the-air) updates are currently limited to critical fixes and security patches only," said Canonical spokesperson Sarah Dickson.

    The critical patching will continue until June 2017, she told LinuxInsider. Then no further updates will be delivered.

    Risky Business

    Canonical declined to provide details about what led to the end of the Ubuntu phone and tablet technology. However, one obvious reason is the low number of users.

    "This is one of those 'What if you gave a party and nobody came?' scenarios," said Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT.

    It is no doubt disappointing for Canonical, but it also calls into question the viability of any mobile OS that does not have a sizable following or a deep-pocketed vendor behind it, he told LinuxInsider.

    "For historical analogies, the early days of the PC business before the market coalesced around Windows and the Mac OS offer some good examples," King observed.

    Exit Strategy

    For the time being, the app store will continue to function, said Dickson. That means users will be able to continue to download apps, and developers can continue to push updates and bug features to existing apps.

    "However, it will no longer be possible to purchase apps from the Ubuntu Phone app store from June 2017," she said.

    After that date, developers of paid apps already in the store will have two choices: make their apps available for free, or remove them from the store.

    Intel Extreme Masters Season 12 kicks off on May 6 and 7, with the first leg to be held in Sydney, Australia.

    IEM Sydney will be the first time the massive e-sports tournament has held a leg in Australia, and will feature an international Counter Strike: Global Offensive tournament, with a prize pool of AUD$260,000.

    The event has attracted globally renowned teams including the Renegades (bought by Boston Celtics forward Jonas Jerebko in August), and SK Gaming, winners of the CS:GO Majors at ESL One in Cologne, and runners-up at the ESL Pro League Finals in Sao Paulo in November.

    "Having been to five different continents is a badge of honor for our historic competition," said VP of pro gaming at ESL Michal Blicharz in the associated press release. "Australia has been an attractive market for us as part of our global expansion of the Intel Extreme Masters brand. We look forward to bringing Intel Extreme Masters to new global audiences and making history for esports in Australia."



    Attendees at IEM Sydney will not only be able to watch matches live on stage, but also take part in other "fan experiences" such as player signings, giveaways, and an attached Intel Experience Zone expo showing off the latest products from Intel and its partners.

    Tickets for IEM Sydney go on sale with Ticketek at 10am AEDT on Monday March 13, 2017. Telstra customers can buy tickets early through the company's pre-sale service.

    Tablets don't have to be big and cumbersome, and the rather clumsily named Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is testament to just that.
    It's not Sony's best tablet - that goes to the Z4 further up the page, but it's super-slim profile, waterproof chassis, bright display and solid line up of specs means it'll comfortably slip in your bag and won't baulk at the first sign of rain.
    However, it's a little older now, so be warned that it won't be getting all the Android updates you might hope for - and it, too, is on the cusp of being discontinued, so be warned that you'll need to get it for a low price to make the purchase worthwhile.

    Apple has just jumped in with another addition to our best tablet ranking with its iPad mini 2 from all the way back in 2013 - but still on sale (although for how much longer is anyone's guess).
    It may not be as high-spec as the iPad mini 4, which is much higher in the list, but it's much cheaper than the latest mini option and still offers a great choice if you're looking for a small tablet.
    Be warned that the screen resolution isn't the sharpest, but if you just want an easy portal to Apple's incredible range of apps and aren't too bothered about specs, this is a great value option.

A few have launched but we're waiting for them to come in for review before seeing if they make it into the top 10, while others are based on rumours but we feel confident they will arrive in 2016.

    The Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro S was unveiled at the very start of 2016 and boasts a great screen, solid build and Windows 10. It's an odd device, but one that works better than we expected it to. The keyboard dock isn't great, with a cramped mouse and keys which aren't the easiest to type on - but over all Samsung's made a solid Windows slate.

    Huawei's first Windows 10 device is a well-designed 2-in-1 that rivals the Microsoft Surface Pro 4 and iPad Pro in places. It's a promising, yet pricey, first 2-in-1 from the Chinese company, managing to feel fresh despite arriving late to the party.

    Sony Xperia Z6 Tablet

    The high-end waterproof tablet
    Things have gone a bit pear-shaped in Sony's camp in 2016. After we expect it to launch either the flagship Xperia Z6 or Xperia Z6 Tablet (or both) at MWC 2016, Sony did neither - instead launching the confusing new X series instead. That's left the talk of the Xperia Z6 Tablet a little up in the air. Will we ever see this tablet?
